Sailing and the Wisdom of Insecurity

Living life is often struggling with impermanence and insecurity, in ourselves and the surrounding cosmos. Sailing is a metaphor for living, forcing one to “Be Here Now.” We will explore this philosophy of living with input from Alan Watts, Carl Sagan, Richard Bode, and Jimmy Buffett.

About Ed Robeau: Growing up in Houston in a diversified neighborhood immunized Ed from most stereotypical cultural influences of the “Deep South.” Education at a progressive high school with strong exposure to science, logical thinking, a quest for knowledge; combined with family tradition and the Viet Nam War’s intensity; led him to full-time cadet training at Texas A&M; and then becoming a USAF officer (financial management, administration, and intelligence).

Learning to sail at age 27 contributed to a change in “course heading” toward a career in mental health treatment & consulting. Surviving numerous unplanned events and “close calls” along the way contributed to his developing a resilience, ability to remain open-minded to the facts as they unfold, and philosophy of life embracing change as opposed to fearing or avoiding it. Sailing the coast of Maine, across the Atlantic Ocean, and now the Salish Sea has had a major contribution to that evolution.
