My Journey from Jainism to UU (From India to US)

I was born into a middle class Jain family in Mumbai, India, the youngest of 10 children.   I came to the US in 1969 at the age of 22.  My talk will describe my understanding of Jainism as was explained by my parents, sister and Jain monks in my childhood until the age of 14.  I will briefly describe how I practice Jainism in my daily life as a UU follower.  Jainism as an ancient religion originated in India at least 3000 to 3500 years ago.  While it is easy to view it as a form of Hinduism, there are many differences.  I will try to explain some differences between Hinduism and Buddhism.  Non-violence and reverence for all life is the most important tenet of Jainism.
