Why the mental health of Jefferson County young people is so important”. Cynthia is the founder of The Benji Project which teaches stress management and emotional resilience skills to teenagers in Jefferson County. Since its inception in 2018, the group has provided programs on mindfulness and self-compassion to more than 1,300 local young people, many of those in school. The organization is named for Cynthia’s son Benji, who died by suicide in 2015 at age 15.
